GANTUNG – The chairwoman of Bangka Belitung (Babel) Family Welfare Movement (PKK) Safriati Syafrizal visited Batik Telinsing Mutual Business Group (KUD).
Located in Gantung, the KUD was the result of the workshop organized by the provincial and regional government. It is one of the pride of the regency now.
Initiated by Fatimah, 64 years old, the typical selinsing grass motif Batik has been sold in local exhibitions on the island.
Fatima, a Quran Education School (TPA) teacher, and one of her friends can produce hand-drawn and stamped batik in various colours.
“After being trained by a trainer from Jogjakarta, I dare myself to produce my own batik. I started with clothes and tablecloths. We also step by step making macramé,” said Fatima.
She told Safriati that the problem was marketing. It took time for a product to be sold. It made it difficult to produce more products. Another problem was production time because there were only two craftswomen. Therefore, she rarely participated in exhibitions in the city.
Safriati responded that her coming was to listen, support, and buy the products.
She suggested adding some craftswomen to increase the production and asking young villagers in marketing.
“Ask youngsters to join. They’re familiar with mobile phone. They can market the products,” she said before buying a scarf. (Nona/SAS)
